Why the handle goes first
On a bronze push pull valve the lever carries every bit of force needed to shift the gate, and that force climbs as the seals age and stiffen. The bronze body will outlast several handles. When the lever cracks or snaps, the valve itself is usually still perfectly serviceable.
What you are buying
This is the handle only. The valve body, gate and seals are separate parts, so if the valve is passing water rather than refusing to move, the handle is not your problem.
Shut the pump off and relieve the pressure in the system before starting. The job is done from the top of the valve, so there is no need to disturb the plumbing.
