Product details

The Pentair 271161Z is the valve spring for HiFlow 2 in. top mount and side mount multiport valves. It is the genuine Pentair part.

What it does

A multiport valve works by pressing a rotating diverter onto a seat. The spring provides that pressure. When it weakens, the diverter no longer seats hard enough, and water finds its way between ports instead of following the position on the handle.

The symptom

Water running to waste while the handle sits on filter is the classic sign. The spring is one of three usual causes, along with a worn diverter gasket and a scored seat, so look at all three while the valve is open.

Pentair lists this spring for models 261124, 261185, 261177, 261173, 261055 and 261152. While the valve is apart, the top o-ring, handle washer and stem o-ring are cheap and worth replacing at the same time.

Which valves does this spring fit?

What does the spring actually do?
It holds the diverter down onto its seat. Without that load the rotor can lift slightly and let water pass between ports.
My valve leaks to waste on filter. Is this the fix?
It is one of the causes. A weak spring, a worn diverter gasket or a scored seat all let water cross to waste, so inspect all three while the valve is open.
What else should I replace at the same time?
The valve top o-ring, the handle washer and the stem o-ring. They are all reached in the same teardown and are inexpensive.
