The Hayward SPX0740D is the valve seat gasket, commonly called the spider gasket, for Hayward SP740 DE filter valves. It has the 3 spoke pattern and is a genuine Hayward OEM part.
What the spider gasket does
Inside a multiport valve, the seat gasket is the ring of raised spokes that separates one port from the next. The rotor presses against it, and those spokes are the only thing keeping filtered water, backwash flow and the waste line from mixing. It is a small rubber part doing all of the sealing work in the valve.
Symptoms of a worn gasket
When the spokes flatten, tear or take a permanent set, water starts crossing between ports. DE or sand shows up in the pool, water trickles out of the waste line while the valve sits in filter, or the valve simply refuses to hold a position. Replacing the gasket brings a valve back that otherwise looks scrap.
While you are in there
The key stem assembly, cover o-ring, shaft seal and key cover with handle are separate Hayward parts. Since the valve has to come apart anyway, it is worth inspecting all of them before you close it back up.
