Product details
The Purex 71720 is the tapered valve rotor seal, listed for Pentair SM and SMBW 2000 Series backwash valves and for the Purex 4000 Series molded DE filters in models 4024, 4036 and 4048.
What it seals
Inside the valve, a tapered rotor turns to line up ports for filter, backwash and rinse. This seal is what keeps those ports separated as the rotor moves. When it hardens or wears down, water finds a path between ports it should never take, and the valve stops doing its job even though the handle still turns normally.
The symptom
Dirt coming back into the pool while the valve is set to filter is the classic sign of a bypassing rotor seal. So is water leaving the waste line when the valve is not on backwash. Both are seal problems rather than filter problems, and both are cheaper to fix than they look.
