The Pentair 271104 is the five spoke spider gasket for a top mount multiport valve. It measures 5-3/16 in across the outside, has a 3/4 in center hole and is 1/4 in thick.
What it seals
Inside a multiport valve, a rotating diverter presses down onto this gasket. The spokes of the gasket divide the valve body into separate ports, and every setting on the handle, filter, backwash, rinse, waste, works only because those ports stay isolated from one another. The gasket is the seal doing that job.
When it has failed
Rubber hardens, takes a set, or tears at a spoke. Once it does, water crosses between ports inside the valve, and the visible symptoms follow: sand or DE returning to the pool, water running to waste while the valve is set to filter, or pressure that will not build. Replacing the spider gasket is the first repair to try in all of those cases.
