What the clamp does
The clamp is the band that pulls the valve down onto the tank and holds the joint closed against system pressure. The o-ring between them makes the actual seal, but it only works if the clamp is holding the two faces together properly.
When to replace it
If the valve seeps at the tank and a new o-ring has not fixed it, look at the clamp. A band that has corroded, cracked or spread open cannot hold the joint tight any more. Check the 8.35 in. diameter against the clamp on your filter before ordering, since Pentair uses different clamps across the valve range.
