How it works
An autofill is a simple mechanical device. A float rides on the water surface in a small chamber plumbed to the pool. When evaporation pulls the level down, the float drops and the valve opens to admit make up water. When the level comes back, the float lifts and the valve closes again. There is no power and no controller in the loop.
When it needs replacing
The failure to look for is a fill line that never shuts off. Check that the float arm moves freely and that nothing is binding in the chamber. If the float is up and water is still flowing, the valve is no longer seating and needs to be changed.
