Small hardware, real job

Retainer hardware inside a DE filter lives in warm, chlorinated, DE laden water. Threads corrode, nuts strip, and a nut that no longer holds lets the assembly move. Once the internals shift, the grids no longer seat the way they should and DE starts coming back through the returns. It is a cheap part to replace while the filter is already open, and an annoying reason to open it again if it is skipped.

Can I use a nut from the hardware store?
It is a poor trade. The inside of a DE filter is wet and chemically aggressive, and the Hayward part is specified for that environment and for the assembly it holds.
What happens if the retainer nut fails?
The assembly it secures loosens, the internals shift, and DE finds its way past the grids and back into the pool.
