Quick overview

  • Genuine Hayward Factory part DEX4800R, matched to the original rod.
  • 28 inches long Rod length is what decides fitment, so measure the old one before ordering.
  • Holds the grid pack The retainer rod is what keeps the DE grid assembly clamped as a unit inside the tank.
  • Sold singly One rod per listing. A filter uses more than one, so count what you need.
  • Check fitment carefully The source lists this rod against the 48 sq ft filter and also against DE2420 and DE2400, so confirm against your tank.
  • A quiet failure A bent or missing rod lets the grids splay apart, which shows up as DE blowing back into the pool.

Product details

DEX4800R is the Hayward retainer rod, 28 inches long, used to hold the DE grid assembly together inside the filter tank. It is the genuine Hayward part.

What it does

A DE filter is a stack of grids that has to stay clamped as one unit. The retainer rods run through that stack and take the load. When a rod bends, corrodes through or goes missing after a teardown, the grids lose their alignment and DE finds its way past them, which is what an owner sees as powder returning to the pool.

Check the fitment before you order

The source information here is not consistent. The part is described as the 28 inch rod for the 48 square foot Hayward DE filter, and it is also listed against models DE2420 and DE2400. The safest check is the physical one: pull a rod and measure it. If yours is 28 inches, this is the right length. Rods are sold one at a time, so count how many the filter needs.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

Which Hayward DE filters does this fit?
The source is not consistent on this. It is titled as the 28 inch rod for the 48 sq ft Hayward DE filter, and it also names DE2420 and DE2400. Measure your existing rod at 28 inches before ordering, and check the part number stamped on the filter label.
How long is the rod?
28 inches.
Is more than one rod supplied?
No. This is a single rod. A DE filter uses several, so count how many you are replacing.
What happens if a retainer rod is broken?
The grid pack loses its clamping and the grids can spread or shift. That usually shows as DE powder returning to the pool and a filter that will not hold pressure the way it used to.
