Product details

The Waterway 520-5167-6S is a Clearwater cartridge filter system, sold as a matched filter and pump rather than as two separate purchases. It carries 150 sq. ft. of cartridge filter area, a pump rated at .95 THP, a gray finish and a 3 ft cord.

Cartridge filtration

A cartridge filter traps dirt in a pleated element instead of a sand bed. There is no backwash valve and no waste line, so nothing is dumped when the filter is cleaned. When the pressure gauge climbs, the pump goes off, the cartridge comes out, gets a rinse with a garden hose and goes back in. With 150 square feet of area, the intervals between those cleanings are long.

Matched as a system

Because Waterway sizes the pump and filter together, the flow the pump produces suits the filter it is fitted to. That takes the guesswork out of pairing a pump to a tank, which is where a lot of undersized and oversized combinations come from.

What does THP mean?
Total horsepower. Waterway rates the pump on this system at .95 THP, which accounts for the motor service factor rather than the nameplate horsepower alone.
Does it come with the cartridge?
It is sold as a complete Clearwater cartridge system, so the filter and its pump come together as one unit.
Do I have to backwash it?
No. A cartridge filter has no backwash valve. When the pressure gauge climbs, shut the pump off, pull the cartridge, rinse it with a garden hose and put it back.
