The Hayward SP1493 is a 1-1/2 inch fitting with a male pipe thread on one end and an insert barb on the other. It is the piece that lets threaded pool equipment meet flexible hose.
How it connects
The MPT end screws into a 1-1/2 inch female port, typically on a pump, filter or valve. The other end is a 1-1/2 inch barb, so flexible hose pushes over it and a hose clamp holds it. That combination is the standard connection on most above ground plumbing and on plenty of temporary or seasonal setups in ground.
Material and handling
It is molded ABS, the same plastic Hayward uses across its union fittings. ABS threads are strong but not forgiving, so use a sealant rated for plastic, tighten by hand and add only a small turn with a wrench. Overtightening is the usual way these fittings crack.
Hayward lists SP1493 both as a hose barb and within its quick disconnect econo union family, so if you are replacing half of an existing union, check what your current assembly uses before ordering.
