The Waterway 417-2201 is a 2 1/2 inch tailpiece machined with a groove for the piston o-ring. It is a Waterway filter part, used on the Crystal Water cartridge filter range.
Why the groove matters
A plain tailpiece is just a pipe connection. This one has to do more: the groove around it holds the piston o-ring, and that o-ring is what actually seals. If the groove is worn, scored or has been chewed by an over-tightened fitting, the joint keeps seeping however many new o-rings you push into it, which is usually the point at which the tailpiece itself needs to come out.

Check the size. This is the 2 1/2 inch tailpiece, and Waterway makes others in different sizes under their own part numbers. Waterway also sells the matching 2.5 inch tailpiece o-ring separately, so if the old one is flat, cracked or has taken a set, replace both at once and you will only do the job the once.
