The Pentair #78DPD All-in-One test kit, part number R151246, covers the six readings a pool actually needs: free chlorine, total chlorine and combined chlorine, pH, acid demand and total alkalinity.

Why DPD, and why combined chlorine

DPD tablets are what let you read free and total chlorine separately. Subtract one from the other and you have combined chlorine, the chloramine that builds up in a working pool and produces the strong chlorine smell and the stinging eyes that people wrongly blame on too much chlorine. A strip or an OTO kit will not show you that number, so the problem goes unfixed.

What is in the box

The kit ships in the red display box with a Lucite test cell, 50 each of the DPD No. 1 and No. 3 tablets, 1 oz each of reagents No. 2 and No. 3, half an ounce each of No. 4 and No. 5, and the water test booklet. The acid demand test rounds it out by telling you how much acid to add rather than leaving you to guess.

What does this kit test for?
Free chlorine, total chlorine and combined chlorine, pH, acid demand and total alkalinity.
What is combined chlorine and why does it matter?
It is the difference between your total and free chlorine readings, and it is the chloramine that makes a pool smell of chlorine and irritate eyes. A kit that reads only free chlorine will never tell you that is happening.
What is acid demand?
It is the test that tells you how much acid to add to bring pH down to target, rather than guessing and overshooting.
