What it does
The drain sits at the base of the filter tank and is what you open to empty the housing, whether that is for a cartridge clean or for closing the pool down for winter. It spends the rest of the year holding back the full pressure of the filter, which is why the gasket matters as much as the cap.
When to replace it
A filter that weeps from the bottom after the cap has been off is almost always a gasket that has hardened or been pinched on reassembly, not a cracked tank. Threads on plastic drain caps also strip easily if the cap goes on at an angle. Both problems are solved by fitting a new cap with a fresh gasket.
