What the manifold does
The manifold is the water side of the heater. Pool water enters through it, passes across the heat exchanger and leaves through it again. Everything the heater does to the water depends on that path staying sealed and clear.
Why it fails
Manifolds crack and corrode with age, chemistry swings and freeze damage. The usual symptom is water on the pad under the heater, sometimes with a drop in flow or pressure. Once the manifold is compromised there is no patching it, and the kit is the repair.
