Why pH will not hold still
Pool water does not stay in balance on its own, and a salt pool in particular tends to climb in pH as chlorine is generated. The usual answer is someone with a jug of acid every few days, which produces a sawtooth: too high, corrected too far, back up again. Continuous small corrections hold a flatter line, and that is what an automatic controller is for.
