What it does
The flap is the moving element of the skimmer float valve assembly. That assembly is what keeps the pump from pulling air if the pool level drops, and it directs flow inside the skimmer body while the pump runs. When the flap warps, cracks or stiffens up, it stops seating and the assembly cannot do either job properly.
Fitting it
The replacement drops straight into the existing skimmer, so there is nothing to modify. It is worth looking at the flap whenever you have the skimmer apart for a basket or lid, since it is a cheap part to renew while everything is already open.
