Waterway 400-1417A is a slotted eyeball return fitting with a 1-1/2 inch male pipe thread, finished in gray. It is the piece that screws into the return inlet and points the water coming back from the pump into the pool.
Why the eyeball matters
The return fitting is the only place you get to decide where filtered water goes. Angled down and away from the skimmer, a return keeps the whole body of water rotating so debris finds its way to the skimmer instead of settling in a corner. Angled straight across the surface, it short circuits the pool and leaves dead spots. The eyeball is what lets you set that, and it can be re-aimed at any time.
Fitting
The 1-1/2 inch MPT thread goes into a matching female return, and the slot in the face gives you something to turn against when seating it or aiming it later. Eyeballs are a wear item: sun and pool chemistry make the plastic brittle over the years, and a cracked or missing eyeball is worth changing rather than living with, since a wide open return does very little for circulation.
