What a ball end union does
A ball end union seals on a rounded face rather than a flat one. That shape lets the joint take a small amount of misalignment between the two pipes without leaking, which is why it turns up on equipment that has to be dropped into a plumbing run that was never perfectly square.
When to replace it
Union halves crack at the thread or at the shoulder, usually after being over tightened with a wrench when hand tight and a fresh gasket would have done the job. Replacing the fitting is far less work than cutting the glued pipe out and rebuilding the run.
