What the nut does
A union is three parts: the body, the tailpiece and the nut that pulls them together onto an o-ring. The nut carries all the clamping load, which is why it is the piece that fails. Once it cracks, the joint cannot be tightened and the equipment cannot be isolated for service.
Fitting and one warning
Union nuts on pool plumbing are designed to seal hand tight against a sound o-ring. If it needs a wrench, the o-ring is the problem, not the torque. Overtightening is the most common way these get broken, so fit a fresh o-ring at the same time and leave the pipe wrench in the truck.
