The Hayward SPX1085B is the widemouth face plate for the SP1077 and SP1085 in ground skimmers. It is the plastic trim that surrounds the skimmer throat where it meets the pool wall.
Why it fails
The face plate spends years in sun and pool water. It chalks, it gets brittle, and eventually it cracks, usually at a screw hole. Once it is cracked it no longer pulls the gasket flat against the wall, which is the point of the part. Replacing it is a straightforward job and it makes the skimmer look new from the pool side.
