The Hayward StarClear C500 is a cartridge filter rated at 50 square feet with 1.5 inch FPT connections. It is the smallest model in the StarClear range, listed under Hayward part number W3C500.

How the StarClear line is built

Hayward designs the StarClear filters with extra cleaning capacity so they suit pools and spas of all types and sizes. The result is a filter that holds more dirt between cleanings than its footprint suggests, which is what you want on a smaller system where the filter is doing the same work as a larger one on a shorter run.

Cartridge versus sand

A cartridge filter has no multiport valve and no backwash cycle. Cleaning means shutting down, pulling the cartridge and rinsing it. There is no sand or DE to buy, and no water dumped to waste every time you clean, which matters where water is expensive or drainage is awkward.

Sizing

Fifty square feet is a modest filter area. It is the right choice for a spa or a smaller pool, but filter area should be matched to the flow your pump actually produces. If the pump moves more water than the filter can pass, pressure climbs and the cartridge fouls quickly, so check the pairing before you commit.
