What fails on a check valve
The valve body outlasts everything inside it. What wears is the flapper, the hinged plate that swings open with flow and drops shut to stop water running backwards. Over time it goes stiff, tears at the hinge or stops seating cleanly, and the line starts draining back when the pump shuts off.
A top down repair
Because the failure is inside the lid, the fix does not involve cutting pipe. The cover comes off, the flapper is replaced and the new o-ring seals the cover on the way back. The valve body stays glued into the plumbing.
