Product details

This is the Hayward SPX0740B, the 2 inch valve cover for the SP0740DE multiport valve. It is the genuine Hayward part.

What the cover does

The cover is the top casting of the valve. It bolts down onto the body, holds the key stem in position, and carries the printed positions the handle points to. It is not a decorative lid: the clamping force it applies is part of what keeps the key sealed against the seat.

Why covers get replaced

Two reasons, mostly. Cracks, which start as a weep under pressure and grow with every freeze and every over tightened bolt. And wear at the stem opening, which lets the stem wobble and stops the key from seating squarely. Either one turns into a valve that will not hold its position or a puddle under the filter.

While it is open

With the cover off, the key stem assembly and the seat gasket are right there. If the valve has been in service for years, inspecting them at the same time avoids taking the same valve apart twice in one season.

Does the handle or the key come with it?
No. This is the cover alone. The key stem assembly and the handle are separate Hayward parts.

My valve weeps from the top when the pump runs. Will this fix it?
If the leak is coming through the cover casting rather than past the stem, a cracked cover is the likely cause. Check the cover for hairline cracks and check the stem seal before you decide.
