What the clamp does
The filter tank is built in two halves that meet at a seam sealed by an o-ring. The clamp is the band that pulls them together and holds that seal against system pressure. It is a structural part, so a clamp that has cracked, stretched or corroded through is not something to keep tightening.
Chasing a seam leak
When water weeps from the seam, most people replace the tank o-ring, which is right most of the time. If the leak comes straight back, look at the clamp itself. A band that has lost its shape, a bolt that has rusted and will no longer draw evenly, or a lug that has started to split will all leave one section of the seam under less pressure than the rest, and the o-ring cannot make that up.
Fitting
Always release system pressure and open the air relief before touching the clamp on a running filter. Draw the new clamp down evenly, and check that the tank halves are seated squarely before applying full torque.
