This is a 1-1/2 in. union with male iron pipe thread on both ends, listed as a replacement for the Hayward SP1480. It puts a serviceable break in the equipment plumbing.
Why unions matter on a pad
Without unions, pulling a pump or a filter means cutting pipe and gluing new fittings back in. With a union on each side, the nut backs off and the equipment lifts out. Any pad that has been plumbed with an eye toward future service has them, and any pad that has not will get them the first time a pump is replaced.
It is also carried as a part for the Hayward XStream CC1000, CC1500 and CC2000 cartridge filters.
Fitting it
Use a thread sealant rated for plastic pipe threads. Hand tight plus a small turn is the target. Plastic union bodies split when a wrench is put on them, and a cracked union does not show itself until the pump is running and the pad is wet.
