Product details

The CMP 21049-150-000 is a 1-1/2 inch self aligning union with a slip socket on each side, for the plumbing around a pool equipment pad. It is also carried under the substitute part number CTM-56-1001.

Why a union goes there

A union is what turns a permanent glued pipe run into something you can take apart. Put one on each side of a pump or filter and the next service call is a matter of undoing two nuts, rather than cutting pipe and gluing in a repair coupling. On a pad that gets winterized or where equipment is swapped, that difference is measured in hours.

The self aligning part

Pipe on a real installation rarely arrives dead square to the equipment port. A conventional union asked to bridge that misalignment seals on one side and weeps on the other. This design lets the halves settle onto their common centerline as the nut is run up, which is what keeps the o-ring seated evenly the whole way around. Tighten by hand only, since the seal comes from the o-ring and not from force.

What does self aligning mean here?
The two halves of the union find their own centerline as the nut is tightened. On a real equipment pad where the pipe seldom arrives perfectly square, that is what stops the union sealing on one side and weeping on the other.
What size pipe does it take?
1-1/2 inch, with a slip socket on each end, so both sides are solvent welded to 1-1/2 inch PVC pipe.
Do I need thread sealant on it?
No. Both ends are slip, so they are glued, and the union itself seals on its o-ring. Thread sealant and tape belong on threaded fittings, not here.
How tight should the union nut be?
Hand tight. The o-ring does the sealing, and a wrench on a plastic union nut is how they crack. If it leaks hand tight, the o-ring or the seat is the problem.
