The Hayward SPX1071KDGR is the automatic weir assembly for the SP1071 skimmer, in dark gray, supplied with its bumper pad.
What the weir does
The weir is the hinged door in the mouth of the skimmer. It floats up to sit just under the surface and narrows the opening, which speeds the surface water up and pulls leaves and film in rather than letting them drift past. It is the single part that decides how well a skimmer actually skims.
When to replace it
A weir that has cracked, gone brittle in the sun, or lost its bumper pad will jam or swing badly. Once it stops moving freely, skimming falls off and debris in the basket can wash back into the pool every time the pump stops.
