What a transformer is doing here

Low voltage lighting runs on 12V to 14V rather than line voltage. The transformer is the piece that steps the supply down and feeds the fixtures, which is what makes the wiring around a pool and through a yard safe to install and to work on.

Two levels of brightness

The second output level is the practical part. A backyard rarely wants one fixed level of light: a quiet evening and a party call for different brightness, and this transformer lets you switch between two without touching the fixtures or the wiring.
