What the knob does
The control knob meters how much water passes through the feeder, and that flow is what decides how fast the tablets dissolve. Turn it up and the pool gets more chlorine, turn it down and the tablets last longer. When the knob will not move, or will not hold a setting, the feed rate is out of your hands.
Why they fail
The knob sits directly in the path of very aggressive water. Tablet residue builds around the stem and the chemistry hardens and shrinks the o-rings, so the knob first gets stiff and then starts weeping around the shaft. Because the seals come with the assembly, the repair puts a new knob on new rings in one go.
