Get the size right
Skimmer baskets look interchangeable and are not. This one measures 7 inches across the top outside diameter, 6-1/2 inches across the bottom and 5 inches tall. Measure the basket you are replacing against those three numbers. A basket that is a little too small sits low and lets debris slip past the rim, and one that is too large will not seat at all.
Why it matters
Everything the basket catches is debris that never reaches the pump strainer or the impeller. A cracked or collapsed basket quietly passes leaves downstream, and the pump is where you find out.
