What the impeller does
The impeller is the part that actually moves the water. Everything downstream, the filter, the heater, the returns, was sized on the flow this component produces. When the vanes wear or debris packs into the passages, the pump keeps running while the flow falls away, and the usual symptoms are weak returns and a filter that never seems to be doing much.
While the pump is open
The mechanical shaft seal sits right behind the impeller. It is worth fitting a new seal at the same time, since the labor to get to it has already been spent and a reused seal on a fresh impeller is the common reason a rebuilt pump goes back on the bench.
