This is the Hayward SPX0740C key stem assembly for the SP0740DE, the 2 inch Selecta-Flo multiport valve fitted to DE filters. It is the genuine Hayward part.
What the key does
The key is the rotating piece inside the valve. Every time the handle is moved to filter, backwash, rinse or waste, the key turns and its face reseals against the seat below. That face does all the work and takes all the wear, which is why it is the part that eventually stops sealing.
Symptoms of a worn key
Water going to waste while the valve says filter, water that will not fully leave a port, or a valve that leaks past no matter how it is set. Those are the classic signs. Because the key and the seat gasket wear against each other, the gasket is usually tired by the time the key is, so plan to change both while the valve is open.

The key and stem come together, so there is no need to press a stem into an old key or fight a corroded joint between the two.
