Product details

The Pentair MasterTemp 460806 is a 250,000 BTU natural gas pool heater with electronic ignition, digital temperature control and a heavy duty cupro-nickel heat exchanger. It is a Low NOx unit, which is what local code usually asks for on new gas installs.

Why the HD exchanger

The heavy duty version is built for water that is hard on a heater: low pH, high flow rates, or a pool that runs long hours. Cupro-nickel takes that better than standard copper, and the exchanger is the part that decides how long a gas heater lasts.

Running it

Digital control sets the temperature the way a house thermostat does, and indicator lights show the operating state without a manual in hand. Electronic ignition means there is no standing pilot to relight after a windy night.

On the pad

The compact cabinet and quiet operation keep it from taking over the equipment pad. Gas heaters need correct gas line sizing and venting, so have the install checked against the manufacturer guide before firing it.

What is the difference between the MasterTemp 250 and the MasterTemp 250 HD?
The heat exchanger. The HD's is cupronickel, which Pentair says stands up to harsh conditions such as low pH, high flow and heavy use, where the standard MasterTemp's is copper. Pentair rates the HD at 82 percent thermal efficiency and the standard heater at 84. The cabinet, the connections and the controls are the same.
Does the MasterTemp 250 HD come in propane?
No. Pentair's manual lists the 250 HD, part number 460806, for natural gas only. For propane, Pentair makes the standard MasterTemp 250.
Where is the manual for the MasterTemp 250 HD?
Under Downloads on this page, as the Owners Manual. It is Pentair's MasterTemp Installation and User's Guide, part number 472592, which covers the 175,000 to 400,000 BTU models in natural gas and propane, the HD and ASME versions included.
What do the ERR codes on a MasterTemp 250 HD mean?
Each one names the safety device that opened. ERR PS is the water pressure switch, which means no water is flowing through the heater. ERR HLS is the high limit switch, ERR AFS the air flow switch, ERR IGN a failed ignition and ERR SFS a stack flue temperature above 480 degrees F. Does the MasterTemp 250 HD have a pilot light?
No. It lights with a hot surface igniter on each call for heat, so there is no standing pilot to keep lit or relight.
