The Hayward SPX1491B is a genuine Hayward o-ring, specified across a range of the company unions, valves and pumps. It is the rubber seal in the joint, and it is the part of that joint designed to be replaced.

Order it by number

O-rings are the one part where measuring the old one is the least reliable way to buy. A ring that has been in service is not the size it started at, since heat, chlorine and compression all change it. Matching the Hayward part number against your parts list is the way to get a seal that actually seats.

When to change it

If a union drips or a pump draws air with everything correctly tightened, suspect the seal before you suspect the fitting. A ring that has gone hard, flat or crazed will not recover, and running it tighter only cracks the plastic around it. Fit the new ring with a silicone based o-ring lubricant, and keep petroleum grease away from it.
