What the thermostat does
The thermostat is the control that reads water temperature and decides when the heater should fire and when it should stop. Everything else in the heater responds to that signal, so when the thermostat drifts or fails, the heater behaves as though something larger is wrong. Water that runs hotter or colder than the setpoint, or a heater that cycles at the wrong points, usually traces back here.
