What a union buys you

A union is a joint you can take apart. Without one, a pump is glued into the plumbing and any service means cutting the pipe and building the joint back with couplings. With one, you back off the nut, lift the pump out and put it back the same afternoon. On a pump that will be pulled for winterising, reseals or replacement, that is the difference between a job and a project.

Sizing

This is the 1-1/2 inch union. The spigot end goes into a socket, and Waterway lists the opposite side as 1-1/2 inch fbt. Waterway makes unions in other sizes and in mixed size combinations, so read the size off your own plumbing before ordering rather than going by eye. A union that is one size out will not seal, no matter how hard the nut is drawn up.

What are the two ends?
Waterway lists it as 1-1/2 inch fbt by 1-1/2 inch spg. The spigot end goes into a socket fitting.
Why fit a union at the pump at all?
Because a pump gets replaced or pulled for service, and a union means undoing a nut rather than cutting and reglueing the pipe every time.
Will it fit a 2 inch line?
No. This is the 1-1/2 inch union. Waterway makes other unions for 2 inch and mixed size connections, so match the size on your own plumbing.
Does it include the o-ring and nut?
It is sold as the Waterway pump union under part number 400-4240. Check the union you are replacing so you know which pieces you are missing before the pump is apart.
