Product details

The Waterway O-242 is the volute o-ring listed in the Viper wet end parts breakdown. It is the genuine Waterway part.

What it seals

The volute is the shaped housing the impeller spins inside, and this o-ring is what keeps water on the correct side of the joint where the volute meets the rest of the wet end. A pump has several rubber parts and they are easy to confuse: this is not the lid o-ring you see when you open the strainer pot, and it is not the shaft seal behind the impeller.

The symptom

Water seeping from the seam around the pump body, often only when the pump is running and under pressure, is the usual sign that the volute o-ring has gone flat. It is worth checking the housing for cracks and the clamp band for even tension at the same time, since either will produce the same leak.

Fitting

Clean the groove and the mating face before the new o-ring goes in. Grit trapped under an o-ring holds the seal open and puts you straight back where you started.

Which o-ring on the pump is this?
The volute o-ring. It seals the volute rather than the pump lid or the shaft, so check which seal is actually leaking before you order.
What pump is it listed for?
The Waterway Viper wet end. It appears in that pump parts breakdown.
Can I reuse the old o-ring after opening the pump?
It is a poor bet. An o-ring that has been compressed and heat cycled takes a permanent set, and it usually will not reseal once disturbed. Replacing it while the pump is open costs far less than opening it twice.
The pump weeps at the seam, is this the fix?
It is the first thing to look at. Water tracking out of the joint around the pump body is the classic symptom of a tired volute o-ring, though a cracked housing or a loose clamp band will do the same thing, so inspect both while you are in there.
