What it seals
The volute is the shaped housing the impeller spins inside, and this o-ring is what keeps water on the correct side of the joint where the volute meets the rest of the wet end. A pump has several rubber parts and they are easy to confuse: this is not the lid o-ring you see when you open the strainer pot, and it is not the shaft seal behind the impeller.
The symptom
Water seeping from the seam around the pump body, often only when the pump is running and under pressure, is the usual sign that the volute o-ring has gone flat. It is worth checking the housing for cracks and the clamp band for even tension at the same time, since either will produce the same leak.
Fitting
Clean the groove and the mating face before the new o-ring goes in. Grit trapped under an o-ring holds the seal open and puts you straight back where you started.
