This is the Waterway 417-5060, a 2 inch heater union with a 2 inch spigot tailpiece. It is the fitting that lets a heater be taken out of the plumbing by hand.

Why the union earns its place

A heater is the piece of equipment most likely to be pulled off a pad, whether that is for a repair, a swap, or to drain it down for winter. Hard piping one in makes every one of those jobs a cutting and gluing job. A union at each port turns it into loosening two nuts. When a union does eventually fail, usually a cracked nut or a sealing face that will not hold after years of heat cycling, replacing the assembly is the straightforward repair.

Match the ends before you order

The tailpiece here is SPG, meaning spigot. It slips inside a 2 inch socket fitting. A socket tailpiece works the other way round, taking the pipe inside itself, and the two cannot be swapped. Look at what is glued into your run before you buy.

What does SPG mean here?
Spigot. The tailpiece is sized to slide inside a 2 inch socket fitting, the opposite of a socket end that a pipe slides into.
What size plumbing does this suit?
2 inch, both at the union and at the tailpiece.
Why fit a union at the heater at all?
So the heater can come off for service, replacement or winterizing by undoing the union nuts. Without one the only way off is a saw and a new run of pipe.
Mine leaks at the nut, do I need the whole union?
Usually yes. Once the sealing face or the nut threads are damaged the assembly is replaced rather than patched, and this is the complete Waterway part.
