What it does
A band clamp is what holds a split filter tank together. Drawn up around the joint, it presses the two halves onto the tank o-ring and holds them there against everything the pump puts into the vessel. The springs in the assembly keep tension on the band as the tank flexes with pressure and temperature.
When to replace it
Corrosion, a stretched band or broken springs all reduce the clamping force, and the joint starts to seep. Because the clamp has to come off to reach the tank o-ring anyway, most people fit a fresh 18 in. tank o-ring, a separate part, at the same time.
