What a lateral does
Laterals are the slotted fingers at the bottom of a sand tank. They let filtered water out while the slots hold the sand bed back. When one cracks, sand escapes into the return plumbing and shows up on the pool floor, usually first noticed right after a backwash.
Threaded, not pivot
These thread into the hub. Hayward also builds a pivot style lateral, which is a different part, so look at how yours attach before ordering. Getting the tank open is the hard part of this job, so replacing the full set while you are in there is worth the ten pack.
