What it does
The impeller threads onto the motor shaft and this screw is what keeps it there. It is a small fastener doing a serious job: if it backs out or fails, the impeller moves on the shaft under load and takes the seal plate and often the impeller itself with it.
When to fit a new one
Replace the screw any time the impeller comes off for a seal change or an impeller swap. Corrosion and repeated torquing both take the reliability out of the original, and on a commercial pump the cost of a fresh screw is not worth weighing against the downtime.
