What it does
The drain plug sits at the low point of the pump housing. In normal running it simply holds pressure. Its real job comes at the end of the season, when it is taken out so the volute can empty. Water left in a pump body through a hard freeze expands and splits the housing, and the plug is what stands between an easy autumn task and a new pump.
Why they go missing
A drain plug is removed once a year, set down on the equipment pad, and not always found again in spring. A pump running without one, or with one that is cross threaded, draws air and will not hold prime. Thread the replacement in by hand and snug it lightly. It goes into plastic, so extra force distorts the thread rather than improving the seal.
