Product details

The Pentair MasterTemp 400 is a 400,000 BTU low NOx propane pool heater with electronic ignition and digital temperature control. This is part 460737, the LP version with a copper heat exchanger.

Why the big output

BTU is heat up speed. A 400,000 BTU heater brings a large inground pool up to temperature in a fraction of the time a smaller unit takes, which is the difference between a spa or pool that is ready when you decide to swim and one that has to be planned around. It is the top of the MasterTemp range.

Living with it

Electronic ignition means no standing pilot burning through the shoulder season and nothing to relight. The digital control panel sets and reads the temperature directly, and the indicator lights tell you the state of the heater at a glance. The cabinet is compact and quiet enough to sit near a patio without dominating it.

Before you order

Confirm the fuel. This part number is propane, and a gas heater has to match the fuel supply. Confirm the exchanger too: this model is listed with copper, and pools with aggressive water chemistry or commercial style use are better served by the cupro-nickel version, which is a separate part number. Installation is a job for a licensed gas fitter.

Is 460737 the natural gas or the propane MasterTemp 400?
Propane. Pentair builds each MasterTemp 400 for one fuel, and the natural gas version is a separate part number.
Where is the manual for the propane MasterTemp 400, 460737?
Under Downloads on this page, as the Owners Manual. It is Pentair's MasterTemp Installation and User's Guide, part number 472592, which covers the 175,000 to 400,000 BTU models in natural gas and propane, the HD and ASME versions included.
What do the ERR codes on a propane MasterTemp 400 mean?
Each one names the safety device that opened. ERR PS is the water pressure switch, which means no water is flowing through the heater. ERR HLS is the high limit switch, ERR AFS the air flow switch, ERR IGN a failed ignition and ERR SFS a stack flue temperature above 480 degrees F. Can the propane MasterTemp 400 be converted to natural gas?
Pentair's manual says not to attempt a fuel conversion yourself and to refer it to a qualified service technician or gas supplier. If the pool is on natural gas, the natural gas MasterTemp 400 is the heater to order.
Does the MasterTemp 400 have a standing pilot?
No. It lights with a hot surface igniter on each call for heat, so there is no standing pilot to keep lit or relight.
What power and connections does the MasterTemp 400 need?
120 or 240 VAC, single phase. It ships with the 240 V plug fitted, and Pentair's manual gives about 5 A at 120 V and 2.5 A at 240 V, on a 15 A circuit. Water connects with the 2 inch PVC slip unions that come with the heater, and the gas connection is 3/4 inch.
