The Pentair MasterTemp 400 is a 400,000 BTU low NOx propane pool heater with electronic ignition and digital temperature control. This is part 460737, the LP version with a copper heat exchanger.
Why the big output
BTU is heat up speed. A 400,000 BTU heater brings a large inground pool up to temperature in a fraction of the time a smaller unit takes, which is the difference between a spa or pool that is ready when you decide to swim and one that has to be planned around. It is the top of the MasterTemp range.
Living with it
Electronic ignition means no standing pilot burning through the shoulder season and nothing to relight. The digital control panel sets and reads the temperature directly, and the indicator lights tell you the state of the heater at a glance. The cabinet is compact and quiet enough to sit near a patio without dominating it.
Before you order
Confirm the fuel. This part number is propane, and a gas heater has to match the fuel supply. Confirm the exchanger too: this model is listed with copper, and pools with aggressive water chemistry or commercial style use are better served by the cupro-nickel version, which is a separate part number. Installation is a job for a licensed gas fitter.
