The failure it fixes
Tank seals flatten, harden and crack with time and chlorine. The result is a filter that seeps or sprays at the clamp band, usually right after a cartridge cleaning when the old ring gets disturbed. Replacing the seal, rather than tightening the band harder, is the fix.
Fitting tips
Clean the groove and the mating face before you set the new ring, and use a silicone o-ring lubricant. It seats more evenly and separates cleanly the next time the tank comes apart.
