The Pentair 523458 is the BioShield flow switch, supplied with its connector. It is the genuine Pentair part, listed for models 522635, 522636, 522637 and 522638.

What it does

A flow switch is a simple safety interlock. It senses whether water is actually moving through the unit and only allows operation when it is. That protects the equipment from running dry and stops it working on stagnant water.

Diagnosing it

A dead flow switch usually shows up as a unit that will not start even though the pump is running and the plumbing is full. Before replacing the switch, confirm that flow really is there, since a clogged filter or a closed valve produces the same symptom for an entirely different reason.
