What the body does
The pump body is the casting that the impeller spins inside and that the suction and discharge plumbing bolt to. It shapes the flow and it holds pressure, which is why a fault here shows up as a leak that no amount of new seals will stop.
Why it fails
Freeze damage is the most common reason, followed by a cracked volute and threads stripped at a port from an over tightened fitting. When the motor is still healthy, replacing the body is worth doing instead of buying a whole new pump. The lid, lock ring and seals are separate parts, so inspect them while the pump is open.
