Why a coarse cartridge
The cartridges a robotic cleaner uses through the season are built to catch fine dirt, which is exactly the wrong thing to send into a pool that has been sitting under a cover all winter. Leaves, twigs and coarse debris pack a fine element solid in a few minutes, and the cleaner spends the rest of the run pushing water it cannot filter. These cartridges filter large debris only, so the cleaner keeps moving water while it clears the heavy material.
Using them
Fit the spring cleanup cartridges for the first runs after opening, empty them as often as the pool demands, then swap back to the standard fine cartridges once the coarse debris is gone. Each cartridge measures 11-1/2 inches wide by 6-3/4 inches high and 1/2 inch thick.
