The Hayward SPX1089K is the weir assembly for the SP1089 skimmer. It is the hinged floating door that sits in the skimmer throat.
What the weir is for
The weir does two jobs. While the pump runs it narrows the opening so the water accelerates across it, which is what actually drags floating leaves and film into the basket rather than letting them slide past. When the pump stops, the weir swings closed and keeps everything already in the throat from floating back out into the pool.
When to replace it
Weirs crack at the hinge, warp in the sun, or go missing entirely. If the skimmer is running but leaves keep sitting on the surface, or the basket empties itself back into the pool every time the pump cycles off, the weir is the part to look at first.
