What the weir does
The weir is the hinged flap across the skimmer mouth. Pump flow tips it open by a small amount, and that narrow gap is what forces the skimmer to draw a thin layer off the surface instead of pulling water from below, which is where the leaves and oils actually are. When the pump stops, the weir falls shut and traps whatever the basket has already collected.
Signs it needs replacing
A weir that is cracked at the hinge, warped, or simply gone will not hold that position. The pool takes longer to clear after a windy day, and debris you saw go into the skimmer is back on the surface the next morning. Both are cheap problems to fix at this level.
